Calcium!! Oh so important calcium. Many of hear that as we age our bones become more brittle and weak, especially in women, and it's totally true. Women are more prone because of pregnancy and lactation periods where extra calcium is needed, as well as, calcium plays a huge role in muscle contractions and hormone regulation in humans. As you can see, although men need calcium too, women require much more throughout their lives. The RDA of calcium is at least 1000 mg and even more during pregnancy and lactation. Unfortunately for some, calcium is most abundant in animal products like meats, cheeses, and milks; however, calcium is also found in collards, dark leafy greens, tomatoes, soy, and almonds. If you are vegan or vegetarian I highly suggest eating or drinking almond products. This is the only plant source containing high enough amounts of calcium to reach RDAs.
